Iskandar Puteri, Johor, 16 March 2019 – The Minister of Youth and Sports, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman urged youths to capitalise on the ready and available Esports infrastructure in Johor to realise the ministry’s aim to make Malaysia an Esports powerhouse in Asia. He relayed the message at the launch of the Iskandar Investment Esports Carnival that is set to take place at EduCity in Iskandar Puteri, Johor on 30 and 31 March 2019. The tournament offers RM150,000 pool prize money and is expected to attract 6,000 visitors and e-gamers.

“The ministry is confident that Esports is here to stay and we are ecstatic to learn that six medals have been allocated for Esports in the upcoming SEA Games in Manila. The presence of the Esports ecosystem in Johor is quite conducive with companies such as Iskandar Investment being at the forefront of this movement, and the Academy of Esports generating batch after batch of professional Esports athletes. I hope more corporate companies throughout the nation will come forward and collaborate with the ministry so that Malaysia can become Asean’s Esports hub very soon,” said Syed Saddiq.

Datuk Ir. Khairil Anwar Ahmad, the President/Chief Executive Officer of Iskandar Investment Berhad said “In 2017, we decided to be a catalyst in Esports development in Johor and formed the AOES which is driven by the movers and shakers in the Malaysian Esports industry. So far, over 800 youths have taken part in our programmes and boot camps, and about 40% of our students are well into being a force to be reckoned with in the industry. We are always open to creative ideas and invite potential investors who are keen to build more Esports infrastructure to Iskandar Puteri.”

Iskandar Investment Berhad and the Academy of Esports organised and co-organised the two-day tournament respectively. The inaugural event is proudly supported by EduCity, TM, MDIS, Wiseeye Solutions, Coca Cola, Monster Energy and Gamers Hideout.
